Sunday was a tough loss for the Green Bay Packers.
Yes, it’s the pre-season and a 24-19 loss in Pittsburgh really doesn’t matter.
But what is important is the health of Green Bay receiver Jordy Nelson. The organization has announced that Nelson will miss the 2015 season due to an injured knee.
Time for the next man up or perhaps, more accurately, the next men up.
Nelson will be difficult to replace. Any all-pro would be. The Packers are going to miss him and his 98 catches for 1,519 yards and 13 scores from a year ago.
Since his rookie year in 2008, Nelson has 400 grabs for yards and touchdowns. The loss of that type of experience will leave a void.
Randall Cobb developed into a big-time receiver in 2014 as he caught 91 passes for 1,287 yards and a dozen touchdowns.
Davante Adams, Jeff Janis, Ty Montgomery, Myles White are all going to have to contribute more in Nelson’s absence. As much as Nelson will be missed, there is an entire season to play and this talented group is going to have to get things accomplished.
One has to remember that the Packers are still led by Aaron Rodgers and as long as he is the quarterback, there is always hope.
The Packers also seem to draft well. How much did we really know about Nelson when he was picked by the Packers? How about Cobb coming from Southeastern Conference powerhouse Kentucky? It’s not like the cupboard is bare.
Obviously, I’m never at practice. I just watch from afar, but this group of receivers can get the job done or they would not be a Green Bay uniform.
In the long run, we must hope that Nelson recovers well and comes back next season.
This season, we must have patience. Let’s see what happens over the next two pre-season games and get ready for a great season. This team can stay on course to the Super Bowl.
